The project of the Master Course in Literary Theory of Uniandrade was recommended by Capes in 2006 and had the first class approved to start its work in the second semester of that year. The Doctorate was approved on October 25, 2019 and opened its first selection process for February 2020.
In relation to research, the proposal for the creation of the Master’s course in Literary Theory in UNIANDRADE also considered the internal and external necessity of expansion of researches that were being developed in the institution. In this sense, it should be highlighted that institutional politics related to post-graduation implemented in the last years through the hiring of qualified professors, the strengthening of the library, the laboratories and the infrastructure, prepared the ground to facilitate researches at more advanced levels. Since its idealization, besides the focus on the development of research and researchers, the Master’s project aimed at the deepening of the critical capacity and expansion of the academicians’ theoretical tools, thus providing subsidies for a more solid intellectual development for professionals in the field of Letters and similar areas, bearing in mind two other priority objectives: the adequate preparation of masters for performing in higher education and the deepening of their critical reading abilities, in accordance with the discussions of the contemporary world.
The activities of the Master Program have turned to the role of the main lines and currents of criticism and literary theory, focusing on Brazilian and foreign literature, literature and its links with history, philosophy, politics, reinforcing the social nuance and expanding the artistic space of literature. In addition, the course was grounded on a wide range of cross-language, which characterizes the current discussion of literary theory. Thus, the course offers a range of theoretical approaches that, starting from literary studies, will cover the most up-to-date discussions on cultural criticism and other versions of culturalism stemming from interrelated approaches to postmodernity. That is, the objective was to discuss, through the subjetcs offered and the research, the various possibilities of literary approaches and their relations with culture, history, other arts and theory itself, whether in their traditional or formulated approaches in the last decades.
Therefore, it was intended, from a broad vision of the literary phenomenon, to offer to the masters a range of knowledge, information and research tools, with standard of quality comparable to the recommended master’s courses of the country. To accomplish this task, contemporary literary texts would be analyzed alongside specific theoretical readings. In order to establish bridges between the various theories and social practices, the faculty of this course emphasized, from its inception, the relations between literary and cultural artifacts, and society with its diversified cultural facets. In this sense, it was intended to offer students a broad approach to the effects of the market and industrialization in cultural environments, whose approaches would enable the definition, with propriety and justification, of the role and place of contemporary literary production and reception.
The subjects of the Master and Doctorate course are offered in three periods: morning, afternoon and evening, allowing students to study the subjects at the most convenient times. As of 2006, more than 250 bibliographic productions of permanent teachers (including only books, book chapters and full papers published in journals) have been published. From the completion of the first class of the Master in 2008, more than 100 dissertations were completed and defended, and students participated in more than 200 events and published more than 200 articles in specialized and anal journals.
According to the latest CAPES evaluation of 2017, the program received 14 “Very Good” concepts and 12 “Good” concepts, summarized in the Evaluation Questions as 1. Program Proposal - Good; 2. Faculty - Good; 3. Student Body, Theses and Dissertations - Very good; 4. Intellectual Production: Very good and 5. Social Insertion: Very good, giving the Master's Program the grade 4 and emphasizing the items:
a) coherence between the area of concentration, research lines, projects and curriculum structure; b) intellectual production (considered very good in relation to the area parameters stipulated for the quadrennium); c) academic-scientific leadership of the program in the region, mainly in charge of research networks and in the promotion of events that impact on student education and the public school system; d) the infrastructure described in the program proposal and confirmed by the CAPES visit committee report; e) good production presented by the student body, considering the parameters established by the area. It should also be noted that this is a program started in 2006, which was visited by the CAPES committee during the quadrennium and that significant changes were suggested by the consultants throughout the quadrennium.
And to the final assessment:
The PPG meets the quality requirements required for grade 4. The Student Body, Theses and Dissertations were evaluated with the good concept. The qualified publications of the faculty (item 4.1) reached the good concept and the distribution of qualified production by the permanent faculty member of the Program (item 4.2) was rated very well. In the other evaluation items CTC-ES accompanies the evaluation area. Thus, the expanded CTC-ES, at its 172nd meeting, aimed at evaluating the programs analyzed during the 2017 Quadrennial, gave grade 4 to the PPG.
The Master Program promotes annually a Research Seminar, which is in its eleventh edition. The program hosted the Irish Studies Association (ABEI) event in 2015 and promoted, together with the Research Seminar, two editions of the International Meeting, in 2016 and 2018, with the participation of teachers and students from over ten HEIs from home and abroad. The goal of the program is to host an International Meeting every two years.
O programa também publica duas revistas acadêmicas no formato Open Journal System: Scripta Uniandrade (B1 – Qualis 2013-2016), para a qual pesquisadores doutores e doutorandos de outras IES enviam seus trabalhos para apreciação e possível publicação, e a revista Scripta Alumni (B3 – Qualis 2013-2016), para a qual discentes da instituição ou de outras IES enviam seus trabalhos, também para apreciação e possível publicação.
